Guide: Mass Post Editor helps you to Manage Multiple Tumblr Posts

Tumblr makes blogging super easy. The variety of post types available, combined with the ability to quote almost anything, translates into an experience like no other. However, if you’ve collected many messages over the years, it’s not easy to manage. And that’s where Tumblr’s less unknown Mass Post Editor comes into the picture. The Mass Post Editor, or the Mega Editor as often called, allows you to delete multiple messages simultaneously. Not only that, but you can also change the tags of multiple posts at once. Sounds pretty handy, right? However, it is not with its shortcomings and limitations, as you will soon discover. So let’s go through the basics of using the Tumblr Mass Post Editor and find out how it works. Don’t let the blandness stand out, though, as you’ll also learn about a valid New XKit mini extension. This new extension drastically improves the functionality of the Mega Editor.

Go to the Mass Post Editor

Loading the Mass Post Editor is quite a pain if you don’t know how it toIt should be on the dashboard, but where exactly? Start by opening the Account menu – select Posts under your primary blog.

And then you’ll see the Mass Post Editor option in fine print on the right side of the dashboard – it’s almost like Tumblr doesn’t want you to find it. Click on it, and you will be taken directly to the Mega Editor.

But wait. How do you make it open a secondary blog? There seems to be no blog selector anywhere in the Mega Editor, right? But see the address bar in your browser. Simply replace your primary blog’s username with that of a secondary blog and hit Enter to load it immediately.

An alternative way to go to a secondary blog is to open the said blog from the dashboard and then launch the Mass Post Editor directly. But for fast switching, replacing the username on the address bar is much better.

Functionality and Limitations

Now that you know how to go to the Mass Post Editor, let’s see how it works. As you can see, all posts are organized in thumbnail format but broken down by month to make locating items more accessible.

While you can scroll down to get to your older posts, you can instead use the drop-down menu in the top left corner of the editor to load posts from any month of any year. As you will see later, this functionality is crucial for effective post management with the New XKit’s mini extension filters, as only posts that load on the page at any given time are affected.

Aside from purely text-based posts, the thumbnails make it pretty easy to identify other post types – when in doubt, you can always double-click a thumbnail to load the post in a dedicated tab. However, you can maximize them directly within the editor himself would have worked miracles. At the top right corner of the Mass Post Editor, you have a series of self-explanatory options: Delete, Edit Tags, Add Tags, and Deselect.

To delete unwanted messages, click on the thumbnails of the messages to select them. Unfortunately, you can’t drag your cursor to select several at once. And there is also a maximum limit of 100 messages you cannot exceed at any point, which is probably the Mass Post Editor’s most significant shortcoming.

After selecting the thumbnails, click Delete. Finally, click OK on the confirmation dialogue to get rid of them. Note: You can’t undo your actions, so ensure you haven’t accidentally selected important messages before hitting Delete. The other functionality that the Mass Post Editor offers is adding or removing your tags from multiple posts (up to 100 at a time). Quite helpful when it comes to re-categorizing old messages. Just click on the one you want to edit, just like when you deleted your posts. The Mass Post Editor doesn’t provide any way to filter posts by their tags, but that’s something that can be easily accomplished with the New XKit add-on. Hold on – you’ll learn about it soon! To add tags to the selected messages, click Add tags button enter the desired tags and click Add tags to confirm.

At the same time, you can choose to remove unwanted tags from all selected messages. Click Remove Tags, then check the boxes next to the tags you want to remove – click Remove Tags to confirm. Note: The Mega Editor presents all tags in all selected posts, even if not every post has every tag.

Unfortunately, that’s all the Mass Post Editor has. But now it’s time to find out what you’ve been waiting for: the Mass + New XKit mini extension that will spin the Mega Editor head over heels.

Mass + New XKit Mini extension

Tumblr’s Mass Post Editor is too barebones. But luckily, the new kit comes to the rescue with its Mass + mini extension. If you didn’t know, New XKit is a special Tumblr add-on with dozens of mini extensions that vastly improve the core Tumblr experience. And in this case, Mass + adds multiple filter options that make selecting specific message types a breeze. Not to mention that you can filter posts by tags too. Sounds amazing! If you don’t have the add-on kit, start by adding it to Chrome or Firefox. New kit for Chrome New kit for Firefox After that, refresh the Tumblr dashboard and go through the new XKit popups onscreen to integrate it with Tumblr – nothing complicated there. Once you are through the popups, click on the New XKit icon on the dashboard.

On the new XKit admin panel that appears up, click Get Extensions. Search for and click Install under Mass +, and you are ready.

Load the Mass Post Editor, and you’ll immediately notice the difference. The top right corner of the screen is now packed with filter options. Starting with the option to instantly select up to 100 posts by clicking Select First 100, which means no more clicking through tons of thumbnails. That’s sweet. The Deselect All option also lets you instantly deselect all selected messages in a jiffy, even if they were messages that you manually selected.

And then come the other goodies – you can filter messages by type, like text, image, video, link, etc., which is just fantastic. Cool Tip The filters only pick up to 100 items of the most recent messages loaded into the Mega Editor. Hence, consider reloading them per month as you see fit to minimize the chances of always selecting the same items. In addition to each month, you’ll find two different options labelled First 100 in This Month and Deselect This Month. The former lets you select the first 100 messages for each month, while the latter lets you turn off all selected messages within the month with just one click from the rest.

When it comes to filtering posts by tags, you need to be an experimental feature for the Mass + mini extension. Reload your Tumblr dashboard to the XKit admin panel, then click Mass + under My XKit. Check the box next to Enable tag search and close the panel.

Refresh the Mass Post Editor, and you should see a new option called Search by tags.

Click on it, and you can filter posts by any tag you insert, which you can delete or change quickly. And to avoid showing only the most recent 100 messages up, choose a month to determine your starting point when filtering repeatedly. Note: Because tag search is still an experiment of the Mass + feature, you can search for only one tag at a time. Still very useful, but keep an eye out for further improvements over time. Well, that’s about it. As you can see, the Mass + New XKit mini extension is pretty cool, so don’t forget to use it. Tinkering with it installed, you should feel at home in no time.

It could have been much better

Tumblr hasn’t made any significant improvements to the Mass Post Editor since its launch. But thanks to the Mass + New XKit extension, you now have a formidable tool at your disposal that can quickly delete and modify hundreds of posts (in repeated attempts, of course). So what are you waiting for? Get your blogs cleaned and updated!
