Guide: How to Turn On/Off Push Notifications on Tumblr
I think Tumblr’s default push notifications are a mess. Distracting popups about blogs, notes, and new followers – from all my blogs – is no fun. Combine that with the myriad of recommendations and reports from followed blogs, and it’s a disaster. And there is the whole problem with useless emails too. Fortunately, you can turn off all Tumblr warnings in no time. But there are still several instances where notifications can come in handy. For example, what if you receive an important message and don’t know about it? For those who just hate all the notifications, I’m going to start with how to turn them off wholly on mobile and desktop. And then, I’ll also get into the different notification settings available so you can decide if you want to keep some intact. Also, read: How to Customize Tumblr by installing XKit.
Turn off all notifications.
Tumblr offers a tremendous amount of control with its notification settings, but when it comes to disabling all push notifications, nothing beats blocking it directly via Android or iOS. However, on the desktop, notifications are displayed in the dashboard, so you’ll have to dive into the Tumblr settings.
Android
Step 1: On the Android Settings screen, scroll down and tap Apps. You should now see a list of all the apps installed on your device. Find and tap Tumblr.
Step 2: Tap Notifications. On the next screen, turn off the switch next to Allow notifications to disable all push notifications.
iOS
Step 1: On the iOS Settings screen, scroll to the bottom and tap Tumblr. Then tap Notifications.
Step 2: Turn off the switch next to Allow notifications. That should take care of all Tumblr push notifications on your iPhone or iPad.
Desktop
Step 1: On the Tumblr dashboard, click the account icon and Settings.
Step 2: Click on Dashboard. I know there is a Notifications option, but we’ll get to that later in customizing email and notification settings.
Step 3: Turn off the switches next to Show notifications and Real-time notifications from people you follow. Wait a few seconds for Tumblr to automatically save your changes before leaving the Settings screen. You should no longer receive notifications on your dashboard.
Manually adjust notifications
If you don’t want to turn off all notifications, you would be pretty surprised at the level of customization you can have. The same is true for email notifications, where you can control what to turn off. Let’s start by adapting Tumblr’s push notifications to mobile, then check what you can do with the dashboard and desktop email notifications. Important: Email notifications are only configurable via desktop.
Android and iOS
Step 1: Tap the account icon, then tap Settings. Then tap General Settings. Note: After tapping the account icon on iOS, you must first select a blog – whatever you select – before you see the Settings icon.
Step 2: Tap Notifications to access the various notification settings that can be adjusted.
You should find them divided into two separate sections: Activity and Recommendations. Let’s see what each of them does for you. Note: Any changes you make will be synced across Android and iOS Tumblr apps.
Activity
The Activity section contains notifications about the various activities surrounding your Tumblr blogs.
Comments – notifies you when someone likes or follows your posts. Followers – alerts you when someone starts following you. Messages – alerts you when someone sends you a message. Only people I follow – receive notifications when blogs you follow add new posts. As you can see, any notification can be turned off completely. For example, if you hate note-taking notifications – a significant annoyance – just turn it off while enabling the other options. Alternatively, you can turn off notifications from all your blogs. If you get likes or followers on a blog you don’t care much about, just tap Refine these notifications under any of the options listed, and you can turn off notifications from that particular blog.
Recommendations
The Recommendations section has mostly useless notifications, but if you’re new to Tumblr, you may want to keep some of them enabled to learn the ropes. Let’s see what we have in store.
Things from Tumblr – mostly related to news on Tumblr. Things you miss – when you’ve been gone for a while, Tumblr pushes popular posts to entice you. Recent updates – annoying warnings about followed blogs. Live video – when someone you follow starts live streaming. These notifications are generic and apply to all of your Tumblr blogs, so there’s no option to narrow them down. Also read: How to Turn off Android notification sounds when you don’t need them
Desktop
Step 1: On the Settings screen, click Notifications.
Step 2: Click the pencil-shaped icon next to a blog for which you want to change dashboard notifications or email preferences.
You should see now up up to five email settings that let you control what type of emails you want to receive in your inbox. In addition, a drop-down menu for notifications lets you choose what kind of notifications can be displayed up on your dashboard.
Let’s see what the five email settings really mean. Tumblr terminology can be weird! New followers – emailed when you get new followers. New Answers – emailed when you receive replies. Listings – emails when someone mentions you in a Tumblr post. Questions answered – emailed when someone replies to a question. New fan mail – emailed when you receive fan mail. Hey! You are popular! Just turn off any of the email notifications listed that you don’t like, and you should be good. The Notifications drop-down menu offers three options that are a bit basic compared to mobileWhile you can’t customize alerts about notes, blogs, and new followers, you can still reduce a lot of clutter that shows up on followed Tumblr blogs. Nobody’s – does show notifications from other Tumblr blogs. From people you follow – only shows notifications from blogs you follow. From everyone – shows notifications from people you follow, as well as other popular Tumblr blogs. The From everyone option is very distracting in terms of the dashboard alerts you receive, so stick to the default option From people you follow or switch to From no one. But hey! Her up to you. When you’re done with the email and notification settings, click Save and repeat for any other blogs you have. Also, don’t forget to use the Apply settings to all blogs option if you want similar settings for all your blogs. It certainly saves a considerable amount of time.
Before closing, don’t forget the Tumblr News switch at the bottom of the screen. This prevents at least one additional email from getting cluttered up your inbox. Also read: Turn off Best Stuff First recommendations via Tumblr Dashboard
Pff, no more distractions
If you really want to blog through Tumblr, those notifications can be a real deal breaker, especially on mobile But instead of turning everything off, it’s always a good idea to turn off only the devices that are causing the most annoyance. You never know when you will receive a answered question or an email about an important mention you were hoping for. So, have you turned off all notifications or just some of them?
