How to turn off automatic updates in Windows 10 – Guide
Microsoft’s automatic update systems, which are called quality updates or cumulative updates, have come a long way. It wasn’t always easy, and there were updates that brought machines to their knees, but it’s hard to remember the last time an update went horribly wrong. In most cases, automatic updates are adequate. You can turn off automatic updates if you’re running on older hardware and you’re happy with the condition of your machine, or you just don’t want to interrupt things with a potentially problematic update. On a temporary or permanent basis. From the update settings screen, you can easily defer any updates to up to 35 days. If you want to stay a little longer, the Registry is the place to go.
How to Knife
To temporarily pause automatic updates, press the Windows key, type Update in the box, and press Enter. This will take you to the Windows Update settings screen. You will find an option on the bottom half of the screen to ‘Pause updates for up to 7 days, but if you want more than that, you’ll want to go to the Advanced Options entry at the bottom of the page. On this screen, you will see the option to pause updates for up to 35 days. Just choose the date you want updates to resume. If you want to defer updates for longer than that, you will need to open the Registry. Press Win+r and type regedit in the run command box. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Policies / Microsoft / Windows and right-click in the right pane, click New and then Key. Name this key WindowsUpdate and press Return. Right click on this key and create a key inside it called AU. Right-click this AU key and create a new DWORD (32-bit) value entry called NoAutoUpdate. Double click this entry and set its value to 1. Exit Registry Editor and restart your machine. After rebooting, you will find that Windows 10 will no longer automatically update. If you want updates from this point on, you will need to check and install them manually. Or delete the keys you just created.
