How To Set Up Outlook.com on Mac OS X Using IMAP – Guide
For users of Microsoft’s email offering, its redesign, more than a year ago, for its new modern look, was definitely a welcome change. However, one of the most glaring omissions since this redesign was the lack of support for the IMAP email protocol, which caused many incompatibility problems with various email applications, including the OS X Mail application itself. Not only that, but nowadays almost all reputable email services use IMAP. We even wrote about the differences between the IMAP and POP email protocols before and concluded that IMAP definitely has some advantages over POP email. Fortunately, Outlook.com now finally supports the IMAP email protocol, and while Microsoft still recommends Exchange ActiveSync to synchronize your email, it is no longer needed. Let’s take a look at how to to define up Outlook.com on the Mac Mail application via IMAP. First, open the Mail app on your Mac and go to the app’s Preferences by clicking the Mail menu in the menu bar and selecting Preferences. Once the Preferences panel shows up, click the Accounts tab (the second on the left).
Now click on the “+” sign at the bottom left of the panel to create a new account. In the email account information panel, enter your full name and your Outlook.com email address but not your password (this is because Mail will attempt to connect to your account using the POP3 email protocol and we want to avoid that). After that, click Continue.
Since you did not write a password, Mail will display an error message.
Click Continue and a new account information panel will appear up. This time, fill in the information as follows:
When you’re ready, click Continue and wait for the new account information panel to appear up. There, you will have to present the Outgoing Mail Server information as follows:
When you are finished, click Continue and on the next screen make sure that all of your information is correct. When you’re ready, click Create button to bring your new Mail account online.
Nice Tip: If you happen to already have an Outlook.com account set up up in Mail using the old method (Exchange ActiveSync), you do not need to create a new one with these settings. Instead, just select it in Mail Preferences and edit your information using the information above. Here it is. Now you can finally take your Outlook.com email account and bring it to the modern era on your Mac. Just be careful to follow all the steps diligently and you shouldn’t have any problems.
