Guide: How to Restore WhatsApp Messages on iOS and Android
I am part of many WhatsApp groups and often delete messages and attachments to maintain my sanity and also reclaim storage space. I am not a huge fan of forwarding messages that add little value to my life. While deleting messages is easy, what happens if you accidentally delete something useful? WhatsApp recently announced that backups made to Google Drive will not be counted against your storage limit. Before jumping for joy, keep in mind that your WhatsApp backups in Google Drive are not encrypted. While some are concerned about the privacy of their data, others may not be aware of this yet. So, how to Restore WhatsApp messages when you don’t have backups in Google Drive? Let’s find out.
1. Recover WhatsApp messages on Android
Not many people know that WhatsApp has a local backup every day at 02:00.up of your data (set by default). Keep in mind that the local backupup one day old, depending on when you decide to restore it. If for any reason you have your phone to factory settings or WhatsApp starts acting up, follow this process. First, you need to delete WhatsApp. Then go to the Play Store and install it again. When you do that, WhatsApp will guide you through the verification process where you will receive a 6 digit code. Enter it and proceed.
After the verification is completed, WhatsApp will automatically search for a backupup on your phoneYou will be prompted to restore messages and files from the available backupup. More importantly, you can see when the backupup is made and how big it is. In my case, it was 10 minutes ago because I did it manually – check out the screenshots below. I don’t want to lose valuable data. You can tap Restore to start the process.
After the backupup is restored, you will be notified of the number of recovered messages. Tap Next to continue. You can now add your name and set a photo as your profile picture. Download WhatsApp
2. Recover WhatsApp messages on Android using file explorer
As mentioned before, WhatsApp makes a local backup every dayup. The above method restores the most recent backup by defaultup. If you want to restore a different version, you will need a file explorer. I recommend Solid Explorer over ES File Explorer, but you can use them all. Start the file explorer. Browse your phone’s internal storage and look for this folder: / whatsapp / databases. That’s where all your WhatsApp backups are stored. Depending on your smartphone and your preferences, this folder can be located in internal or external memory. If you cannot find this folder structure, tap the search icon and type ‘msgstore’ without quotes.
You will see different results in the following format: msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12. You can now choose to restore any backup file based on the date. Note in the screenshot above that the first file (msgstore.db.crypt12) in the list has no date. That file is the most recent backupup of WhatsApp messages. Before proceeding, make a copy of that file and move it to another folder. Now rename that last backup file to whatever you want. Then choose the backup file you want to use to restore messages, and delete the date portion (YYYY-MM-DD) from the file name to make it look like a recent backup file (msgstore.db.crypt12). In the previous section, WhatsApp found and recovered a file. So you should do the same. Delete and reinstall WhatsApp, restore from backupup and check your data. Download Solid Explorer
3. Recover WhatsApp messages on iOS
While WhatsApp managed to make a deal with Google, Apple refused to play nicely. You cannot back-up create WhatsApp to Google Drive on your iPhone. All your backups are stored in the iCloud and the frequency is the one you selected in the WhatsApp app. By default, Auto Backup isup set to Daily, which means that there is a backupup of your WhatsApp chats up daily to the iCloud. To back-up from iCloud, you must follow this process. Delete WhatsApp from your iPhone. Use the link below to download it again from the App Store. You will be asked to verify your number with an OTP text message.
Once you’ve done it, WhatsApp will ask if you want to restore from a recent backupup or skip it. Tap the Restore option in the top right corner. You can see the date and size of the backup file here. Once the WhatsApp backup file is restored, you can start using the app. Download WhatsApp
4. Recover WhatsApp messages on iOS with iTunes
If you use iTunes to regularly back up your smartphone, then there is nothing to fear. If not, this is the end of the road for you, I’m afraid. You have to use either one to create backups on iPhone. There is no way to restore app-by-app via iTunes. This means that when you restore via iTunes, you restore your entire iPhone, all apps and their respective settings, along with WhatsApp. If you are ready and willing to go this route, here’s how. Connect your iPhone to your laptop, where iTunes is installed, using the iPhone cable. Launch iTunes and it should detect your iPhone automatically. You will be asked to unlock your iPhone. At this point I would like to request a new backupup just in case. Click the device icon in the top left of iTunes.
Here you can create new backups or restore an old one. Use the drop-down menu to choose backup files based on date.
Again, you are not only recovering WhatsApp data here, but the entire contents of your iPhone, such as contacts, messages, etc. I recommend that youup before restoring an old one.
What’s up with your backups
There are a few ways to restore WhatsApp backups even without Google Drive no matter what mobile OS you are using. It shouldn’t be that hard. If you are not using Google Drive to back upup of WhatsApp data, you should because it will make your life easier. If security is your primary concern, local backups are your only alternative.
