Guide: How to Remove Recent Files in Adobe Reader
All Adobe Acrobat DC products (Pro, Standard and Reader) are excellent PDF powerhouses. That said, there are certain problematic elements of the user interface. We recently covered how to hide the Tools panel and remove the pasted tabbed view. And today we will tackle another related problem: the recent list. The Recent list contains shortcuts to your most recently opened/opened files. It’s also quite useful. It’s awful in terms of privacy, though; if you share the device with someone, it’s a real nightmare. It’s certainly no fun letting someone stumble across sensitive or confidential documents, right? So let’s take a look at how to get rid of items in this list and what to do about it all together.
Adobe Acrobat on desktop
All Adobe Acrobat DC versions make it easy to remove shortcuts from the Recent list on a desktop. And if necessary, you can choose to have the list not show any of your recent files either. The process is similar in every version. Note: Deleting items from the Recent list does not delete the actual files. Only the shortcuts are removed.
Delete recent files
Adobe Acrobat syncs your list of recent devices (desktops and mobiles) where you are signed in with your Adobe ID. However, synchronization is only limited to shortcuts that point to files in the Adobe Document Cloud – those items have a cloud-shaped icon. So if you delete them, the Recent list on all connected devices will be cleared automatically. That said, there are multiple ways to delete the shortcuts. In the Recent list, hover over the shortcut you want to delete. Then click on the box that appears up on the left of the list to select it. You should see a separate panel appear on the screen. Click Remove from Recent to remove the shortcut. You can also choose multiple items and delete them all at once.
If you have a lot of items in the list and want to delete most of them, make selecting less of a chore by clicking the box to the right under Recent. This prompts the application to select all items in the list. Then you can turn off the items you want to keep on the list.
You can also choose to delete the entire list immediately. There is a Clear Recent option in the bottom right corner of the window. Click on it and then click Clear List in the confirmation box.up to flush the entire list.
Turn off recent files
If you don’t like Recent files populating a list with every file you open, you can configure Adobe Acrobat to stop displaying them. There is a built-in option that allows you to change the number of items displayed on the list – reducing it to zero effectively turns off the recent items list. Step 1: Open the Edit menu and click Preferences.
Step 2: In the preferences pane, click the Documents side tab. Type ‘0’ in the box next to Documents in Recently Used List.
Step 3: Click OK to save your changes. And voila! No recently opened files should be displayed up afterwards.
However, if you open a document located in Adobe Document Cloud, the shortcut to the file will still be displayed up in the Recent list on another desktop or mobile that you have signed in with your Adobe ID. And furthermore, removing the limit on the recent list will prompt the application to display the most recent files you opened before doing that. These are possible loopholes that someone can take advantage of to view your documents.
Adobe Acrobat on Mobile
On Android and iOS, the Adobe Acrobat Reader app does not prevent the Recent list from showing your recently opened files. But you can still delete individual or multiple items from the Recent list. Let’s see How to do that. Warning: Be careful! Unlike on a desktop, there is also a ‘Delete’ option that will delete not only a shortcut, but the actual file as well. So don’t get confused.
Android
On the Android version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, it’s just a matter of tapping the three-dot icon next to a listed item. On the menu that appears up, tap Remove from Recent to remove the shortcut.
To remove multiple shortcuts from the list, press and hold an item to enter selection mode. Now check the boxes next to the items you want to delete, tap the three dots icon in the top right corner of the screen, then tap Delete from Recent.
You can also delete the entire list at once. To do that, tap the three dots icon in the top right corner of the screen with no item selected, then tap Clear Recent.
iOS
Deleting items from the Recent list on the iOS version of Adobe Acrobat DC is similar to the one on Android, except when it comes to selecting multiple items to delete. Tap and hold won’t work – so tap the three dots icon and then tap Select to enter selection mode.
After you have selected the shortcuts you want to delete, after that, you need to tap on the appropriate icon as shown in the image below. Tapping the trash can icon will also delete the actual file, so be careful.
Again, removing shortcuts from the Recent list to files stored in the Adobe Document Cloud will remove them from all other devices as well.
Privacy is no longer a problem
The Recent list is a useful implementation, but very harmful to privacy. Fortunately, it is quite easy to cover your tracks. Don’t forget to disable the list if deleting shortcuts keeps getting chore. Here’s the hope that the mobile version of Adobe Acrobat Reader will also have the option to disable the list shortly. The next up: Do you want to remove some pages from a PDF? Unless you opt for a paid version, Adobe Acrobat won’t let you do that.
