How to install the developer beta Android 13 Preview – Guide

Google has released the first developer preview of Android 13, the next major OS update for phones and pills. The update currently includes new privacy and security features, such as a new photo picker to limit which photos and videos an app can access. There are also new tools for developers to design application icons. Just because the first version of Android 13 is called “Developer Preview” doesn’t mean you need a paid developer account or other restrictions like Apple often uses for its iOS beta program. Instead, think of the developer name as Google’s way of saying that the build isn’t done yet, that it will still have bugs and issues, and that it’s solely for developers to install on their development devices. In others words, is not intended for the average user. Anyone with a few minutes to spare and a phone (more on that in a second) can install it, but you probably shouldn’t. At least not at the moment.

How to install Android 13 on Google Pixel

Download Android 13

The first step to install Android 13 on your Pixel is to get the files. There are two ways to do this. First, you can install a factory image that will clean your phone and restart everything from scratch. Alternatively, and this is how we describe it here, there is an OTA file that installs on the current version of Android without wiping the phone. You can download the OTA beta file from Google’s Full OTA Image hosting site. This page contains OTA downloads to load various updates, including Android 13, for all Pixel and Nexus devices ever made. For Android 13 Developer Preview, only Pixel 4/XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5a, Pixel 5 and Pixel 6/Pro are available. You cannot install it on original Pixel/XL, Pixel 2/XL, Pixel 3/XL or Pixel 3a/XL.

Booting into recovery mode

Next, you need to boot your Pixel into recovery mode. To do this, turn off the device completely. Then press and hold the power button and the volume up button at the same time until you reach the bootloader page. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see an Android picture on your screen. Scroll down to recovery mode using volume keys. Select it by clicking on the power button. Alternatively, if you are already connected to a computer with ADB, you can use the reboot recovery command. You should now see a smaller Android device with an exclamation point on it. From here press the power button and the volume up button for about a second to fully activate recovery mode. When releasing the volume up button you will enter recovery mode.

Connect the device to a computer that has the ADB tools installed. This step is important because it is the only way to transfer the downloaded OTA file to the device. You should have the ADB and Fastboot tools in a convenient place. You can download the ADB tools from the Android Developers site (or just the SDK tools here). You can also use ClockWorkMod’s universal ADB drivers, which can simplify the process a bit on Windows devices.

This step is important because it is the only way to transfer the downloaded OTA file to your phone. You should have the ADB and Fastboot tools in a convenient place. You can download the ADB tools from the Android Developers site.

Type the sideload command

When everything is in place, you can sideload the OTA file. On Windows, make sure the command prompt points to the ADB Tools folder and type adb sideload. On macOS or Linux, do the same in the terminal (use the “cd” and “ls” commands to ensure your terminal points to the correct folder; google it if you need help), but type ./adb sideload. Then type the file name of the .zip folder you downloaded from Google and press Enter to start the process. If everything works correctly, you should see a dialog box on your computer and phone which shows the sideloading and installation process.

Once the OTA installation is complete, you will be taken back to recovery mode. The last step to start the new update is to select the option Restart now with power button.
