Guide: Google News vs Apple News: Which App is Ideal for you

News keeps us informed of everything that is happening around us. Many may point to the negativity in the media these days, but many good things are also being reported. So you need a well-curated list of sources. Google News and Apple News are two notable news aggregator apps at the forefront of everything. One of the reasons these apps boomed is the diversity of regions and news and the ability to filter them as needed. I mostly read about technology, personal finance, health and fast cars. Other people have different needs. Download Google News for iOS Download Google News for Android Download Apple News With that thought in mind, let’s get started.

Interface is important

A thoughtlessly designed app can otherwise ruin a perfectly good experience. Google News follows the material design it has been preaching for a while. The bottom tab has four options. They are self-explanatory, but we’ll explore them in more detail below. A nice touch is the weather forecast which you can tap to expand.

Apple News has three tabs at the bottom according to the proven formula. Like Google News, the first tab shows news stories based on your reading history and settings. Instead of the weather, Apple News shows today’s date. Unhelpful, but ok.

Overall, both have a clean user interface with information and settings at your fingertips. I think Google is doing just that little bit better. Apple News uses larger fonts, which can benefit people with low vision.

Where Google News excels

Starting with Google News, you’ll find top stories of the day in the For You tab. They are also numbered. Scroll a little further and you will see more updated news. The promotion is on the Headlines tab. You can change the news category or read world news in the top bar. Some stories can be scrolled to get more related headlines.

Then there is the option View full coverage. That’s where you can dive deep and discover a really popular story. That includes articles and videos you can watch directly in the app. It helps with perspective.

Deep down, the coverage feature lies another excellent option – Timeline. The timeline shows the chosen story as it unfolds. So you know what happened, when, and especially in what order. All stories are arranged by date. Finally, there are opinions from popular blogs. Google News also posts popular tweets from notable people here.

Apple News is on

Maybe it’s me, but I don’t appreciate how Apple News reads the news. A big headline tells me what to expect: news I missed this weekend. That’s a waste of precious screen space. The two-column approach is too busy for me. And then the two-column news is abruptly replaced with a single column. Lack of consistency is how I would describe it.

There is no deep dive, full coverage, or timeline feature here. That makes it difficult to explore one story, read opinions and explore different points of view. In the Spotlight tab, Apple will curate stories from many sources and categories for you. Again, instead of a way to pick individual topics like health and technology, like in Google News, Apple News has a headline that says, Good Read This Week.

One way that Apple News differs in a good way is through widgets. Google News shows the top four to five articles. Apple News divides the widget into Top Stories, Trending, and Top Videos.

For some weird reason, that’s not the case on my old SE. I just see top stories. But many users have confirmed it with their own screenshots. Inconsistency seems to be a consistent theme here.

Adjust sources

Both Google News and Apple News have a like buttonA concept made popular by Facebook. The app will show more similar news and content if you tap on that. But there is a better way to adjust your sources. Tap Follow in Google News to add topics. You can add topics based on TV shows, sports teams, specific companies, and so on. Of course, there is also an option below to add major media houses and blogs.

Can’t find what you are looking for? Find it manually and create a custom feed. Even small towns that no one has heard of are supported. After all, Google is the largest search engine in the world and managing content is what it does best. Google News also shows you local news and is pretty good at that.

In the Newsstand, you can view not only all the popular blogs and sites, categorized by niches, but also the paid magazines you have subscribed to. Tap Follow in Apple News to find content sources. While it covers all major resources, it’s not as robust as Google News. I could use my home city, for example, which I did in Google News. Also, only broad niches such as health and sports are proposed, but individual topics such as Game of Thrones are missing.

On the plus side, being an Apple app, it integrates with Siri, which has advantages. You can ask Siri to inform you or read the latest headlines.

Pricing

Google News is completely free, except for magazines you subscribe to. That’s not Google’s call anyway. Apple News shows you ads.

You can subscribe for $ 9.99 to remove these ads and unlock paid content from over 300 magazines and blogs with a paywall. This service is called Apple +. The decision to subscribe depends on how much you’re already paying for a subscription and whether it makes financial sense. Note that Google News is cross-platform, but Apple News is not. That shouldn’t surprise you.

Nose for the news

There are several theories as to what the full form of news is. Some say it’s North, East, West, South to cover stories from all directions. Others say its notable events, weather and sports. The word news is derived from the word New, which means that everything is new in the world or region you live in. Google News is a lot more customizable to miss. In addition, the user interface is very polished and you can even find obscure topics to follow. The fact that it is entirely free cannot be ignored.
