Guide: Fix ‘Gmail Waiting for Sync Error’ Issue
While Slack and other corporate messaging apps have reduced the amount of time we spent on Gmail, it’s still important. And all hell breaks loose when you open Gmail to only be greeted by Waiting for Sync Error. Today, no one likes to wait for someone or something. As always, we are there for you. Before we start, I assume you’ve already checked your internet connection (both mobile and Wi-Fi), airplane mode is off and restart your phoneIf you are getting this error in a browser then try it mobile app instead. Let’s start.
1. Gmail has stopped working
It wouldn’t be the first time either. Open Downdetector and check if Gmail is not working. Especially in your part of the world. Down detector keeps track of various services and whether they are up and run or not.
Handy site you should consider as a bookmark. If the Gmail servers aren’t working or are experiencing a malfunction, there’s not much you can do. Take a short break. Maybe take a walk. Visit Downdetector
2. Update App
You should always use the latest version of all apps as they come with new ones features and bug fixes. Check if an update is available in the Play or App Store. You may also want to consider updating your operating system. It could help.
3. Manual synchronization
The error itself says there is a sync error. Hence, you should try to sync emails manually. Open Settings and tap Sync. Select Google from the list of apps.
That’s where you will find all the Google apps running on your phoneMake sure the sync option is checked. Tap More at the bottom of the screen and select Sync now.
Wait a few seconds before checking for the Waiting for sync error again.
4. Re-add account
Remove Google account from your phone and re-adding it can help too. You can do it on the same screen as above Sync. Open Settings and go back, but this time tap on Delete Account option.
Add the account again from the same screen. Enter your credentials and 2FA if you have them set up and give it a moment to sync.
5. Old data
Old data can be easily corrupted and cause sync and other errors. That applies to all apps and not just Gmail. Open Settings and tap Manage apps and search for Gmail.
Tap Clear data at the bottom and clear all data and cache here. You may need to log in again, and since all the data is up in the clouds there should be no problems anyway.
6. Permissions
Apps need permission to access various types of data stored on your phoneIt also needs permission to function properly. Since Google is such an integral part of Android, everything should be fine. Let’s double check quickly.
Open Settings and go back to the same screen where you deleted cache files. You will see App permissions there. Make sure all three are selected.
7. Account compromised
It’s a never-ending battle. It’s a classic story between a good man and a bad guy. The number of hacks and data leaks seems to be increasing recently. You could be the last in a long line. Open a Google account and log in from the link below. Go to the Security tab.
If you’ve received an email or notification of any kind stating that the app or service used your Google account to sign in, which you don’t remember, now change your password and maybe even your Google -pin.
Scroll a bit to find the shortlist of recent security events. Click View security events to view the full list. Did you notice anything that is out of line? Contact Google.
You can also see a list of all devices that are currently signed in and have access to your Google account. Click Manage Devices directly below it to remove it immediately if you don’t recognize it.
Do you remember the third-party app we talked about earlier? Scroll a little further to find third-party apps with account access. There you can view all the apps that you have given access to your Google account in any capacity. This last step is, I don’t know, too much. While it seems like this and it may have nothing to do with waiting for a sync error in Gmail, it is still possible. Here’s an example. Malicious code can prevent your device from contacting or syncing with Google’s servers. Sounds scary? It is. Google account
