WipEout Omega Collection looks avant-garde despite its graying roots. It can be hot on Dirt 4’s heels – with a pair of tricks taken from its friendlier stable mate – but make no mistake: Dirt Rally 2.0 reaffirms this spin-off series’ reputation as the premier rally simulator of the modern era. Dirt Rally 2.0 is primarily designed for rally enthusiasts and returning fans, so new players may struggle initially. The original Dirt Rally ended up being augmented with a stack of tutorial videos in time of your jump from PC to console, and Dirt 4 features a full Dirt Academy training mode set in the sprawling DirtFish Rally School – a real-life facility located in the US Pacific Northwest. F1 2021
The world of F1 was set to be transformed this year, thanks to the prospect of radical new regulations and cars. However, like so many things during the pandemic, the changes were delayed until leaving F1 on a 12-month wait pattern. The real-life season looked set to offer few surprises, but the reality is that this season has so far been the most interesting championship in years. Interestingly, it’s against this backdrop that Codemasters found itself competing with its own fictional drama, introducing a full story mode for F1 2021 for the first time in the series. The result final falls a little short of being as dramatic as the real thing, but it’s a well-executed and welcome new way to play that joins the series’ wide range of existing modes and makes for another excellent package – although it needs a little extra content to align it with the real-life season. WRC 9
WRC 9 is an excellent rally simulator. We said this when we first reviewed it on PS4 three months ago. Bringing improvements in handling, lighting and graphical fidelity – plus a selection of new rallies in Japan, Kenya and New Zealand – these refinements in key areas have helped define it as one of the best rally simulators of the generation. When we say it’s hard to go back to that version after trying the PlayStation 5 update, we don’t mean it lightly. Available as a free upgrade, game owners will be delighted with their new systems. There are tangible updates here for just about everyone, with the game now running at 60 frames per second in 4K resolution and with improved lighting and HDR. It might not be the best looking racer ever, but everything looks crisp and load times, which were usually long on previous hardware, are now almost non-existent. Unfortunately, the pop-in scene still shows its ugly face, which can be an unwanted distraction in the middle of the rally. Buy now
