Guide: Best Download Manager Extensions for Chrome Browser
We all know that Google Chrome is one of the best web browsers in the world. But there is only one small area where it lags: the Download Manager. Come on Google, Chrome is fast and elegant, but can’t you build a good download manager? Firefox did a perfect job. You can access it with one click and can also easily resume failed downloads. However, Chrome has a huge library of extensions to get the job done. In the past, we have discussed some download extensions that can effectively help you download things in bulk. Now, here we want to show you how effectively you can manage them. The search for the perfect download manager begins. So let’s see how to get Firefox style download manager in Chrome, with these 3 extensions.
1. A simplistic download manager
If you want a simple and effective download manager, you should try Download Manager. It has a clean interface and looks just like Firefox’s. The interface contains a list of your downloads and an option to search the downloads. You can also customize the extension. You can make the download bar disappear, activate launch animation just like in Firefox and receive notifications that the download is complete.
You can also choose to open the download file in its folder or just open it directly. And the last option is to set the theme. There are not enough options for that at the time of writing this article. The search works fine and I did not find any errors while using the extension. It is a simple and straightforward download manager for the average user.
2. Even simpler Download Manager
Now, maybe you fall into the category of the ‘not-so-technical’ user or maybe you have less of a need for a download manager (well, if so, you probably wouldn’t have come across this website). Or maybe you need an even lighter extension that doesn’t make Chrome bulky. If so, you should try Download Box.
It’s so simple and light, yet it fulfills the basic need of quick access to downloads. The download panel is not scrollable. So you need to open Chrome’s download manager to access other downloads. There is also no search option. But it is very easy and fast to use.
3. The Super Duper Download Manager
Now here comes a supreme download manager for those power users out there. It’s called the Chrono Download Manager. Well, it’s not just a download manager, you can do a lot more with this extension. There are too many features to cover completely here. But I’d like to mention some really interesting ones that power users like me will certainly appreciate. The Chrome extension actually has two divisions. There is a Chrono download manager and a Chrono Sniffer. Click the search icon at the top and the Sniffer will open. Chrono Sniffer allows you to batch download multiple types of files. Yes, batch downloads. Simply open a website that contains the content you want to download – images, videos, gifs, mp3, etc. Sniffer grabs all the links and prepares them for download.
You can further select which content to download and then click Start All! Clicking. Now press Ctrl + J and Chrono’s download manager page will open. Here you get full customizability. You can set a background image and also change the download list view from list view to detail view.
The interesting part
You can add your own categories to the sidebar on the left in download manager. To do this, there is a control system that you have to set yourself. Now go to the manager’s options by clicking on settings at the top of the page. There under Rules system you will find a set of rules for each category.
Now, before you scratch your head, I recommend that you read the Help section where the whole rules system is explained. Although I’ll give you a taste here how to use it. Now suppose you want to set a specific category in the download manager for images you download from Shutterstock. So here in the rule settings add the following values.
Under the Caption column, you need to add the name to appear in Categories. The following is the reference name you can use in other rules. You can set this name as you wish. Set the condition in the next column. If the condition becomes true, the downloaded file will be added to this category. So the condition – * name * .has (“shutterstock”) checks if the filename contains the Shutterstock substring. You can refer to the function tables in the help section for all the functions you can try. Here I could have taken * url * .has (“shutterstock”). It gives the same results. This is the Shutterstock category. Don’t forget to check the As Tasks Filter column for the newly added rules.
The next is Extension Filter. Here you set which file types the Chrono Sniffer can retrieve from the opened website. You can add the file extensions to be displayed in the sniffer. You can also create your own subcategory that will be displayed in the Sniffer.
Also one more feature I would like to point out the naming of masks. You can predefine the names of the downloads. For example, you can add the date or the title of the website to each download along with the file name. Like this – 2016/2/16-facebook-random-pic.png. To get such a download name, set the name masks. Again, see the Help section for more information about all the parameters you can set for naming masks. You can set the naming masks in the General section. You can use symbols such as “-” or “|” for better readability.

Is your hunt for a perfect download manager over?
I really liked Chrono Download Manger. I wish it had more functionalities such as downloading specific file types to the specific folder instead of the common Downloads folder. That would be cool.
