Guide: Best Chrome Extensions to Block Page Elements

You often come across websites with page elements that really get on your nerves. They could be huge navbars that stay at the top of the browser window anyway, distracting social media widgets following you, or huge signs up forms that come out repeatedly without warning. Recently, I came across a huge header on an eBook portal online. It took up a significant portion of the screen space and was a major eyesore. Then I looked for ways to get rid of the monster. And with Chrome, extensions can help solve any problem. So I have found not just one but five extensions that can make short work of unwanted web elements. Let’s take a look at them.

1. uBlock Origin

uBlock Origin is an excellent ad-blocking extension for Chrome, and arguably the best in terms of performance. But the functionality doesn’t stop there. On the contrary, uBlock Origin also comes with a phenomenal element blocking that works like a charm. Download uBlock Origin With the extension installed and activated, right-click anywhere within a web page and select Block Element from the context menu.

You can then move the cursor and the extension will automatically highlight elements that you can block. Make your choice, click Create and the selected element should be permanently blocked. You can also manage blocked elements with the uBlock Origin dashboard. Right-click the uBlock Origin extension icon, click Options, then click My Filters. You can then remove previously blocked elements from the filter list.

Overall, uBlock Origin should help you block any unwanted page element quite easily. But again, the extension also blocks ads, so don’t forget to whitelist your favorite sites. You can also choose to turn off the ad blocking filters and use them exclusively as an element blocker.

2. Click to delete element

Click to Remove Element basically offers the same element blocking capabilities as uBlock Origin, although it doesn’t block ads. And it works exactly as the name implies. Download Click to delete element After installing the extension, click on the extension icon. You can then move the cursor around and the extension will highlight all blockable elements on a page. Click on an unwanted element and the extension should block it immediately.

Blocked elements are displayed up in the Click to delete element box in the lower right corner of the screen. If everything looks good, you can choose to have the extension ‘remember’ your changes on subsequent visits.

3. ChuckIt

ChuckIt is another fantastic element blocker that is just super easy to use. Once installed, click the ChuckIt icon next to Chrome’s address bar and you can instantly delete elements with a simple right-click. And it’s pretty fast at what it does, as there are no menus or popups.up boxes to deal with. Download ChuckIt However, any changes you make are not permanent. But it is perfect for use on sites that you don’t visit too often. For example, you can easily delete videos that are playing automatically on any site you came across in a few clicks.

4. ElementHider

ElementHider is different from the extensions you went through above. Instead of pointing and clicking the element you want to delete, insert keywords instead. Download ElementHider Simply enter keywords (broad or specific) that an element can contain, and ElementHider will automatically block them on all sites, be it Facebook posts, Twitter tweets, Google search results, news articles, etc. You can also choose for them choose to blur elements. instead of blocking them.

The extension is quite easy to use. Click on the ElementHider extension icon, insert the keywords and you should be good to go. You can also choose to make keywords case sensitive or case insensitive. While ElementHider doesn’t have the same visual appeal as the other extensions, it’s perfect for blocking elements that contain similar types of content without having to deal with them repeatedly across multiple sites.

5. CustomBlocker

CustomBlocker looks complicated, but it’s actually quite easy to use. While you can choose to add the rules yourself (provided you are familiar with HTML and CSS), using the built-in element picker is the most convenient. Download CustomBlocker Click the CustomBlocker extension icon and then click Suggest under the Elements to Hide section. You can then simply click on any element you want to block within a web page, and it should usually be added automatically.

You can also further refine filter rules using keywords. For example, if there are several similar elements on the page, insert relevant keywords to determine exactly what you want to block.

Tidy is neat

The above extensions should help you deal effectively with all kinds of ridiculous looking web elements online. uBlock Origin, Click to Remove Element, and ChuckIt work best if you prefer a visual approach to blocking elements, while ElementHider and CustomBlocker allow a different view through the use of keywords.
